Of course, they won't do all the work for you, but I find they help get you closer to the point where you increase the odds of triggering a flow-state during training or racing.įor most people, music is a great way to distract your busy mind and help crack open the door to flow-state. Over the year's I've tried to figure out different "hacks" to help cheat my way into a flow state. Flow is an actual neurochemical shift in your brain from Beta waves (your everyday brain waves) to being in a state where you predominantly have Alpha and Theta brain waves. I realized later that all the issues pre-race had removed all my layers of anxiety and left the door open to enter the flow-state. ![]() I outperformed by every measure and won the race by a wide margin. If you think back to your very best and most memorable sporting performances, I will bet you were in a flow-state.įor years I struggled with nerves at big competitions until one day at a National Championships, everything had gone wrong leading up to the race, and I had nothing to lose. So your mind is calm, and yet the body is energized. What does flow-state feel like? For me, everything else falls away, and only the task at hand has your hyper focus.
